Many of you have asked questions about Vitamix and my thoughts on it so I decided to do something a little different and dedicate a whole post to it.
Oh where do I begin to explain my love for this machine….
Hands down Vitamix is the BEST. My favorite kitchen appliance by far…beats my Kitchenid by an embarrassing amount. And I am not getting paid to say these things. To quote a lil Duck Dynasty for you, it makes me happyhappy.
Here is the thing. Before this lovely piece of metal came into my life, every single day I would have to try to come up with a creative way to try to get my boys to eat any sort of vegetable. Every meal felt like a stand off and more often than not, would usually end with Sam and I feeling frustrated and the boys in tears. Sometimes, even fruit was difficult to get down them. My Henry has a major issue with texture and, well, a lot of fruit is slimy and to him that means yucky. I have to admit, <hands covering my face> some meals I didn’t even put a fruit or vegetable on their plates (I know!) just because I wasn’t in the mood to deal with all of it…I just wanted to have a simple dinner. I know that some of you out there have natural born foodies who will eat or try anything, but my children are on the opposite end of that spectrum. So trying to get in a full day’s worth of fruits and vegetables was pure torture…for me and for the kids.
I tried everything. I tried getting creative with toothpicks, making silly faces on their plates, adding it to ice cream, and still nothing. I looked at the sneaky cookbooks…you know the ones that add all sorts of pureed vegetables into the recipes. They rave about how kids eat the chicken nuggets oblivious to the cauliflower puree that is a key ingredient. But, c’mon, I barely have time to empty my dishwasher, let alone, make up a ton of vegetable purees to store in my freezer.
And then I found this lovely machine. Vitamix came riding in on his white horse and saved the day. Now, everyday by 9 in the morning, my children have usually already had at least 6 different fruits and vegetables. No fighting, no tears…in fact, they are usually asking for their smoothie or wanting to help me make them. That mommy worry…you know that little voice in your head that frets about every aspect in your role as a mother, well, it fades away in this area. I literally don’t worry about my boy’s nutrition because I know they are getting tons of fruits and vegetables. I still add fruits and vegetables to their plates, but I don’t sweat it if they don’t eat it after they try a bite. And when the pressure is off, I’ve noticed that it is more fun to try different ways to incorporate the healthy things into our meals. I never thought I would say this, but in the past week, my kids have eaten kale, beets, spinach, romaine, carrots, cucumbers, tomatoes, blueberries, apples, oranges, bananas, coconut, strawberries, blackberries and so much more.
Probably the biggest concern to every person I’ve spoken to is the price…$450 on average. Yep, Vitamix blenders are expensive. I was turned off when I first saw the price, too, but now that I have it, I can tell you I would have paid double for what it has done for me (I ate a lot of veggies/fruits before, but now the variety is so much better) and my family. Plus, we use ours on average twice a day so after the first month, I figured it cost us $7.50 each time we used it. 4 green smoothies for less than $8 wasn’t bad in my opinion. We have now had the Vitamix for about 6 months now and it is costing us less than $1.30 to use it. I promise you it is so worth it. They do sell some reconditioned machines for around $300 that include the warranty so that’s another option, too! You will want to make a permanent spot on your counter for this product. We use it for smoothies, salsa, sorbets, soups…weird that all of those started with an “s”. It can also make some ridiculous cocktails. Bonus for the adults!
The whole fruit margaritas are amazing and probably our favorite cocktail to make.
Some people say that they use their regular ole blenders to make smoothies. I did try that a few times before we made the big purchase and, at least for me, there were always a few rather large chunks that it would miss. The Vitamix blends everything to the smoothest consistency…it’s insane. Plus, blend something for 4 minutes and it becomes steaming hot. My boys love the carrot tomato soup which is a recipe that comes in the accompanying cookbook.
If you are one of those parents struggling to get fruits/vegetables into your children’s mouths, do yourself a favor…wave the white flag and purchase one of these mixers. Consider it an investment…into your sanity! I promise you will not regret the decision. In fact, I will warn you that you will probably go on a Vitamix kick and will talk endlessly to complete strangers about your love of this appliance. You will beg other people to get it so they can see for themselves and share the gift that is the Vitamix, too. Just watch, you won’t be able to keep it to yourself either.
